Common Questions

How do I get started?

With Clever (schools): Teachers should start by adding Humdrum from the Clever Library. After that, teachers and students can launch Humdrum through Clever without creating separate accounts. Returning school users can also use "Log in with Clever" from Humdrum. A teacher must be authorized to act for their school. If your district uses Clever Library (Instant Login), district-level approval is recorded through Clever and you will not see a separate Humdrum consent prompt. Humdrum remains responsible for its COPPA obligations.

With an email account (families): A parent or guardian creates an account using their email address. After verifying with a one-time code and confirming consent, you can create up to five separate writer profiles for your family.

As a guest: Click "Continue as Guest" and complete the adult attestation form. A teacher, parent, or guardian must confirm they are supervising the student's use before the account is created. That confirmation is not verified parental consent.

How do I use Google Classroom?

Teachers who are authorized to act for their school can import class names and selected roster names from Google Classroom™. Identifying as a teacher is not enough. Connecting Classroom is not verified parental consent. Humdrum remains responsible for its COPPA obligations. This is not the same as a student signing in with Google, and it is not a Google partnership or approval.

Humdrum requests only two read-only scopes: classroom.courses.readonly and classroom.rosters.readonly. It reads the names of active classes the teacher teaches and, for classes the teacher selects, student roster names and Google user identifiers. It does not request student emails or permission to change Google Classroom. Identifiers are hashed. Roster names are stored as enrollment names. The browser holds only an opaque handle. The Google access token is encrypted on the server and is short-lived.

To connect: open My Classroom, read the notice, confirm you are authorized to act for your school, then choose Choose from your Google Classroom classes. Re-sync uses the same notice if Google access is missing.

To disconnect: open My Classroom, choose Disconnect Google Classroom. That revokes the Google access token, deletes the encrypted token, and clears the opaque handle. Disconnecting does not delete imported class names or hashed seats.

Anyone can also revoke Humdrum at https://myaccount.google.com/permissions.

To review imported roster names: open My Classroom.

To delete imported roster names and hashed seats: delete the Humdrum account, or email hello@noticehumdrum.com. There is no numbered completion window for that email path.

Humdrum's use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

What is included in a family account?

Family accounts include 14 days of full access for up to five separate writer profiles. After the trial, prompted writing, blank writing, saved stories, editing, and the library remain free.

A subscription costs $8 per month or $80 per year. It unlocks Story Dice, Story Crasher, Image Carousel, Side Quests, Writing Powers, Author Bio, and Haiku Journal.

What are Side Quests?

Side Quests are short, guided writing adventures that teach creative techniques like simile, metaphor, alliteration, and more. Completing a Side Quest unlocks a Writing Power — a skill the app then tracks as your child uses it in their own writing.

What are Writing Powers?

Powers are creative techniques your child has learned through Side Quests. Once a power is unlocked, Humdrum's detection system notices when your child uses that technique in their writing. The more they use it, the more the power levels up. It's about identity — showing kids what kind of writer they are.

Does Humdrum use AI?

Humdrum uses AI to detect creative writing techniques (like simile, metaphor, and alliteration) in your child's writing. This is how Writing Powers level up. The AI analyzes writing in real time and discards it immediately — no writing is stored, logged, or used for training. Kids never interact with AI directly. For full details, see our Privacy Policy.

How do I reset a student's account?

Contact us at hello@noticehumdrum.com with the student's pen name and your account email. We'll help you resolve any account issues.

Can I export my child's work?

Yes! Teachers, parents, and families can request data exports at any time. Contact us and we'll provide a complete export of your child's writing within a few business days.

How do I delete student data?

Schools, teachers, and parents can request deletion of student data by emailing hello@noticehumdrum.com. We'll process deletion requests within 30 days in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

How does Humdrum handle COPPA?

Humdrum remains responsible for its COPPA obligations. We do not claim COPPA compliance here pending legal approval.

A school teacher must be authorized to act for their school. Identifying as a teacher is not enough. We log the attestation they give us. Adult supervision or a checkbox is not verified parental consent.

  • Google Classroom: Before Connect or Re-sync, the teacher reads a Classroom-specific notice and confirms they are authorized to act for their school. Humdrum records the teacher's Humdrum user id, the school email domain if that email is already on the account, the time, and the notice version. That confirmation is not the Clever/Humdrum consent record and is not verified parental consent.
  • Clever users (schools): Teachers confirm they are authorized to act for their school when setting up their classroom. For Clever Library (Instant Login), district-level approval is recorded through Clever and the separate Humdrum prompt is skipped. Humdrum remains responsible for its COPPA obligations.
  • Email accounts (families): A parent or guardian provides their email, verifies it, and confirms educational use before any child writing is stored.
  • Guest users: A teacher, parent, or guardian must confirm they are supervising the student's use. That attestation is logged. It is not verified parental consent.

Attestation records are logged (version, method, timestamp).
